Cassis Cornuta/Horned Helmet (Linnaeus 1758)
“The strikingly large Horned Helmet Shell ”
The helmet shells are a large family of very solid and often thickened shells found in shallow tropical seas.A heavy shell with a large, thick parietal shield, a short spire, and varices at right angles to each other. It’s shoulder has a row of large knobs with three spiral, humped ribs below. The surface is covered with rows of small pits.A very thick outer lip has large teeth grouped at middle. The columella has a few strong, wavy folds. Gray or white, with brown bands behind outer lip. Orange on columella and on teeth of outer lip.They typically feed on sea urchins and are often seen partly buried in sand with only the top and a couple of horns showing.
